TEN FAQ'S ABOUT SELLING BY MAIL
By Gary Christensen

These are the questions that are asked of me the most, from new people entering mailorder. These are the Answers I give to these FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions):

(1) Which of the Marketing Methods produces the most results? The "2-Step Method" produces the most sales per flyers mailed! Briefly, you should (Step 1) Place small ads to draw in inquires; Offer a free sample or free information in your ads,.. and then (Step 2) Send the Item requested to all who respond, PLUS send them your other sales material, your catalog; brochures, etc. to close the sale! The 2-Step Report is available (for $1.00) from: Christensen's, 999 NW Sycamore ave., Corvallis, OR 97330

(4) Is there a way to get my Printing at less than full price? How to get all your Printing at Half-Price: (Here's Three methods:) (A) Go in together with one other person; have YOUR 2 flyers printed back-to-back. Each pays half the cost & and gets half the amount printed! (B) Check with Mail Order Printers. Find out if they need dealers to sell printing! You make a commission on each order, PLUS you get your own printing at a discount! (C) Get your printing done by a Co-Op printer; He prints his ads on back of yours. He charges less for the printing; YOU do all the mailing, giving him extra distribution! You both benefit! You both save money! (6) Is there such a thing as Free Advertising? (My advertising budget is very limited!) Here are 3 Ways to get lots of FREE Advertising: (A) Tell Publishers of any "News" you may have; Info on New Products; A New address; New partner, etc. They'll tell their readers about it, Free! (B) Trade something which YOU can provide to publishers, for free ads from them: things like typesetting; art work; distribution of copies of their magazines, etc. (C) Allow DEALERS to use your ads & circulars over their name; they place your ads; they get orders for you, etc! 15 More Ways to get FREE advertising, for $1., from: Christensen's, 999 NW Sycamore ave., Corvallis, OR 97330

(7) Which Mail Order Trade Magazines are best for pulling in orders? These 3 Mail Trade Publications ALWAYS have done well: (1) " Introduction to Mail Order", Box 10150, Terra Bella, CA 93270-0150; (2) "Emerald Coast News", 21 NE Racetrack Rd., Ft. Walton Beach, FL 32547 (3) "Mail Order Messenger", Box 358, Middleton, TN 38052 - Write each for rates; circulation figures; maybe even a sample copy!

(8) How do I turn One-Time Buyers into Repeat Customers? Three ways to turn inquiries into buyers: (1) Send them your best quality follow-up material as quick as possible (2) Offer them a discount; maybe a few dollars off the listed price! (3) Offer to them the opportunity to be one of your dealers! They place YOUR ads; get orders for YOUR products, etc. (Complete Reports on "Obtaining Dealers" available for $1., from Christensen's, 999 NW Sycamore ave., Corvallis, OR 97330)

(9) What are the Most Powerful Words to use in my Advertising? The best words to use in your advertising are: (1) The word "FREE" still pulls in the most responses! Offer something FREE, to get people to write to you for that FREE item! (2) The word "New" is also an Attractive and Appealing Word, although something is only NEW for 6 months! (3) Using the word "YOU" helps to personalize your message to every reader, as in: "This Product will make you look years younger!" (12 Other Best words, for $1., from Christensen's)

(10) Should I use Classified Ads to make sales? Classified ads should be used only to obtain inquiries. Classified ads should NOT be used to make sales! You just can't do an effective job of describing your product, or give enough reasons why someone should send you an order, from a small 30 or 40 word ad! Classifieds should be used to TEST wording; to test a new publication or a new product name, etc. But, it should only ask for those who are interested to write to you for more details! You then follow-up with your sales material!
