Replacing
the HV capacitors in a Central Electronics 100V
(also applicable to the 200V)
The high voltage capacitors
in these rigs are frequently bad and need replacing. It is very
difficult to find the replacement cans (240uf/450v) but a satisfactory repair
is to leave the original
capacitors in place (C304, C305) and install new electrolytics under the chassis
as shown in
the photo below. I used a total of six 80uf/450 volt capacitors which are
readily available from a
number of sources (Mouser, etc). Two sets of three in parallel wired in series.
I used two long
terminal strips mounted on two angle brackets which are bolted to the side
of the chassis.
Note: Best way to make holes for the mounting brackets is to use a metal hole
punch.
Remove the 100Kohm equalizing
resistors (R306, R307) from their original location near the HV choke.
They can be reused with the new capacitors. Disconnect the red HV wire and
one side of the HV choke
from C304. Reconnect these wires to an unused terminal strip nearby. Run a
new wire from this junction
to the new capacitors. That's it; you're done.
