809 AREA TELEPHONE WARNING

There is a new scam involving calls to a telephone number with an 809 prefix (Caribbean) which is a "pay/call number! Everyone knows not to call a 900 number but very few know that 809 is the same.

The scam involves sending an e-mail message that directs you to call a telephone number with an 809 prefix. The message indicates you should call immediately and mentions something about legal problems, family problems, a great business deal, or something that will make it difficult for you NOT to make the call.

If you call, you are charged $25.00/MINUTE! You can guess how difficult it would be to try to get this charge taken off your telephone bill. To make it worse, if you make the call the message or caller at the 809 number attempts to keep you on the line for as long as possible. It could be 3-4 minutes before you figure out you've been duped ...but then it's too late to avoid the charges. What do to is clear:

DO NOT CALL ANY TELEPHONE NUMBER WITH AN 809 PREFIX UNLESS YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE CALLING OR HAVE CHECKED OUT THE NUMBER IN ADVANCE.
